It is of ultimate importance that Home Theater systems configured with various loudspeaker shapes and sizes (as dictated by room layout and décor) maintain sonic uniformity, otherwise the spatial surround sound image created by the recording engineers will suffer.

Loudspeaker Shapes & Aesthetics
Rectangular and square shaped loudspeakers look good in walls and in ceilings, while round loudspeakers look good in ceilings but not in walls. Round Mount loudspeakers with round and square grilles are much easier to install in ceilings than rectangular types.
Physics, Engineering & Fidelity
In order for loudspeakers to sound their best, they must be designed with the amount of air volume behind them in mind. This goes for all loudspeakers. It is simply a matter of physics. All of our models are of the infinite baffle variety meant to load into a minimum of 1 ½ cubic feet of air volume. Typical wall cavities range from approximately 3 to 4 ½ cubic feet in volume, while ceiling volumes are of course much larger. 16″ on-center 2×4 stud bays with horizontal fire blocks may divide the stud bay cavities down to very close to that 1 ½ cubic foot size.
An infinite baffle mount stated in simple terms is one in which the volume of air behind the loudspeaker is large enough that it has no restrictive effect on, or interaction with, the movement of the drivers. Furthermore, the baffle (the surface the driver is mounted to) is long and wide enough that the back waves of the drivers are completely isolated from the front waves.
The stellar performance level of Noble Fidelity Loudspeakers is achieved through a number of technological advantages; principal among these is minimizing the detrimental effects of diffraction and early reflections which plague so many loudspeaker designs in varying degrees. Following their respective definitions, this point will be made again and again as it is fundamental to Physics, Engineering & Fidelity.
Diffraction, defined: (Webster’s Dictionary):
1. The phenomenon exhibited by wave fronts that, passing the edge of an opaque body, are modulated, thereby causing a redistribution of energy within the front. 2. The bending of waves, especially sound and light waves, around obstacles in their path.

Diffraction is a splintering and/or re-forming of a wave front.
Diffraction always occurs when a wave front encounters an obstacle, or abrupt change in surface.
Consider the effect a breakwater has on aquatic waves; breaking large waves down to considerably more and smaller waves. This may be of considerable benefit on the seashore, but not in the High Fidelity reproduction of recorded sound waves.
Diffraction negatively affects our spatial sensory abilities because the extreme multiplying and redistribution of wave fronts confuse our direction sensing capabilities.
Sound waves which bounce off surfaces on the loudspeaker itself, the wall or ceiling it is mounted to and the floor, objects, etc. very near to it, these reflected sounds reach the listener only nanoseconds, or fractions thereof, after the sound waves themselves emanate directly from the loudspeaker system.
Early Reflections cause a very definite blurring or smearing of the sound, flattening the spatial aspects, reducing the elusive high fidelity reproduction sought. In contrast, Late Reflections are those sound waves that bounce or reflect off room boundaries and objects relatively far or distant from the loudspeaker, reaching the listener a relatively long time after the direct signal does. This is where room acoustics come into play, which are very important, but not the domain of the loudspeaker itself.
There are many studies of these paradigms, many of which are here on the Internet. If you are intrigued or interested in reading more on these fundamentals, consider performing an internet search using keywords such as “acoustic diffraction”, “acoustic early reflections”, “acoustic boundary distortion”, etc.
Our Rectangular models utilize baffles which are ribbed for strength and rigidity. This reduces baffle flexure as well as diffraction and early reflections. Phase Plug pole piece extensions significantly reduce phase disturbances that occur near the center of the low frequency/midrange drivers. Ultra-high-grade hemispherical soft dome textile tweeters have excellent (160 degree) dispersion properties. This coupled with the pivoting feature provides high frequency performance that will reach most any listening position in the room.
Our Round-mount models utilize the same tweeter motors and diaphragms as our rectangular models. We pole-mount our pivoting tweeters rather than the much more common bridge-mounted approach used by many others. The performance of co-axial (round-mount) loudspeakers that employ pole-mounted tweeters is vastly superior, so much so, that it is mind-boggling that bridge-mounts are so pervasive in the marketplace. The reason pole-mounts are superior is because their footprint (in front of the woofer/midrange driver) is so much smaller than that of any bridge thereby minimizing diffraction & early reflections.
To save money, many manufacturers utilize the crutch of an acoustic lens to improve the dispersion performance of low cost tweeters. These fancy looking little 2, 3 or 4 footed discs of various shapes and patterns are suspended across the face of less than hemispherical (usually hard dome) tweeters to re-direct or force (actually smearing) their narrow beam-like radiation to the off-axis regions where they are ineffective. The result of this band-aid approach is a ringy, diffraction-laden high frequency response that flattens the sound field and is hard on the ears.
Unlike the case of the tweeter band-aid which is used to save money, bridge-mount assemblies are more expensive than pole-mount assemblies. This is a classic example of misallocating funds. The only rationale we can discern for the use of bridge-mount tweeters with acoustic lenses is that possibly, (tone-deaf) manufacturers who use them believe that they are visually more attractive and will aid in the marketing process.
The overall diameter of our round models are only as large as they need to be. If you compare ours to other brands you will find that our mounting and finished-size diameters are smaller. This is because we do not add any extra space or material between the woofer/mid-range driver frame and the mounting frame to make them look larger, fancier or to accommodate tweeter bridges. Our woofer/mid-range drivers are mounted in a “far forward” position. Competing designs which utilize bridge-mounted tweeters, are forced to enlarge the mounting frames and recess the woofer/midrange driver back into the assembly to provide room for the bridge. Once again, this further contributes to diffraction & early reflections and creating a “mega-phone effect.”
Locating any reflective surface or mass in front of a wave radiating element significantly increases diffraction & early reflections. This is true in either example, the bridge-mounted tweeter in front of the woofer/mid-range cone, or the acoustic lens across the tweeter face.
Confluence of Science, Art, & Ecology
Each Noble Fidelity model employs drivers that have been carefully matched for sensitivity & linearity with high power handling & extended frequency ranges. Technically elegant crossovers marry the drivers into a nearly seamless, harmonious partnership. EQ switches for mid-range & high frequency trimming are present on most models for addressing room acoustics on a practical basis.
